Confirmation radioactive waste was transported through Port Augusta has cemented the resolve of campaigner Anne Kroes to lobby the State Government to upgrade Yorkey’s Crossing.
Ms Kroes has collected more than 2000 signatures from residents and intends to continue her fight until the State election next month.
Her campaign was prompted after a truck narrowly missed hitting her and her car last year.
She said the highway and bridge through Port Augusta were never designed to handle the current volumes of traffic.
“The federal and State governments are playing Russian roulette with the safety of residents in Port Augusta. We’ve got two lanes going into a single lane bridge ... Something has to be done. Let’s not wait for a fatality.”
“If there’s a pile up on the bridge, how do people on the west side get to the hospital?”
Her petition also includes a proposal to install amber warning lights, which would pre-warn truck drivers when lights at intersections are about to turn red.
She said she was angry the State Government had refused to assist local government.
“And the Federal Government, who are responsible for national highways, tells our local council that a two-lane each-way bridge is 10 to 15 years away.”
Ms Kroes and her husband will be collecting signatures outside supermarkets in Port Augusta on Thursday and Friday.
