Arsonists jeopardise homes, lives

22 Jan, 2010 10:45 AM
A spate of deliberately lit fires endangered homes and lives across Port Augusta during the Christmas and New Year period.

A grass fire on the corner of Tassie Street and the Davenport community in January turn off could have been much worse, if it had been lit 24 hours later - a Catastrophic fire day.

It burnt 600 square metres before the Metropolitan Fire Service (MFS) brought it under control, station officer Darren McNamee said.

“The way the prevailing winds were it would have taken it into the industrial area,” he said.

“It becomes very annoying. They don’t realise the potential they have got in starting those fires.”

On December 21 a small fire by the Flinders Terrace train bridge was lit dangerously close properties.

Witnesses saw two young boys running away, while a January 2 fire in grass and trees at Willsden Primary School was probably also started by children.

In the early hours of New Year’s Day two small grass fires were lit behind the police station.
