Four Aboriginal enrolled nursing students have been up in the air with the Royal Flying Doctor Service, as part of a partnership between TAFE and the charity.
Kya Trott, Erica Franey, Nita Kalialaha and Tanya Betts had spent part of their time training at Pika Wiya and studying through TAFE, but the experience with the RFDS has been once-in-a-lifetime.
They each went to different areas of the outback, including Maree, Yalata, the Nullarbor, and Oodnadatta.
“It’s good when you go back to your family, they look up to you and are really proud of you,” Ms Betts said.
It was Ms Franey’s first time in a small plane when she embarked on her first flight on an RFDS plane, and like the other women, she was nervous.
“I couldn’t sleep, I was scared,” she said.
“But you forgot about the flying part when you brought people back on the plane,” Ms Franey said.
Ms Trott said she was nervous but mostly excited as she set off with the RFDS team to the Nullarbor.
