Following a spate of anti-social behaviour at The Wave skate park, Port Augusta police have proposed an idea to keep rebellious skaters in line.
Police have suggested parents, council and police establish a ‘skate watch’ program similar to that of the Neighbourhood or School Watch programs.
Council recently closed the skate park for more than three weeks following severe littering and general disrespect by some users of the facility.
Senior sergeant first class Russell Morgan from the Port Augusta police said police would support a ‘skate watch’ program through provision of a co-coordinator.
“Through positive co-operation between council, community and police, we can all work towards providing a safer, better place to live.”
Parents of children who use the skate park were supportive of the idea.
Theresa Perks’ teenage son Dylan regularly rides at the skate park and she said a ‘skate watch’ program was a “really good idea”.
“I occasionally get worried about Dylan at the skate park.
“I think it would be good to have someone watching over our kids when they’re not at home and to make sure they’re not getting into trouble.”
