The Port Augusta campus of the Australian Technical College was officially opened last week.
Federal Minister for Vocational and Further Education Andrew Robb went to the campus on Wednesday.
"This Australian Technical College is a specialist school which will provide the Spencer Gulf and Outback communities with a first-class educational institution," he said.
"(It) sends a strong message to the community that the days when a trade or vocational qualification being regarded as second class were over."
The campus took its first intake of students in February this year, and currently has about 20 students enrolled.
The campus will work in a collaborative partnership with local government and non-government schools for young people to achieve trade training through a school-based apprenticeship while completing year 12.
Member for Grey Barry Wakelin also welcomed the opening.
"This important initiative has been well received by local business and industry, and this will help to address the regions skills needs," Mr Wakelin said.
"The fact that this college is being led by local employers, local government and other key stakeholders means it will be truly industry and community responsive."
