Thieves target homes, cars

13 Jan, 2010 10:54 AM
Police are becoming increasing concerned about a recent spate of break-ins around Port Augusta.

Despite police warnings, there were a number of robberies over the Christmas and New Year period.

On Christmas Eve a ladies handbag and all its contents, including a digital camera, was stolen from a property on Barry Street.

On the same weekend a $2500 106cm Sony Bravia television was taken from a home on Mildred Street, while an attempted break-in was made on property in MacDonald Street.

On Sunday afternoon an elderly woman on Eyre Highway had her purse stolen from her home while she was in the yard.

Sergeant Rick Errington said Port Augusta Police were now seeking information relevant to any suspicious activity and wish anyone who has come across a second hand Sony Bravia television to contact them.

Matthew Flinders Lookout is also becoming a target of thieves, according to Port Augusta Police.

Sergeant Rick Errington said vehicle break-ins had been an ongoing problem in the area for the last three to four months.

“Police remind people who live in Port Augusta that if they visit the Red Banks area or the Arid Lands, or if they have friends calling by that want to visit the area, please do not leave valuables in plain sight in unattended vehicles,” he said.

During the first week of January, cars were broken into on Bolitho and Pybus streets.

Items stolen included a PlayStation Portable and a backpack.

In other police news, a man was hit in the head with a bottle and had his home vandalised by a large group of people on Friday afternoon.

Three people were arrested and charged over the incident, while police are still tracking down another three people of interest, who are all known to the victim.

The victim was taken to Port Augusta Hospital and treated for minor cuts. Police enquires are continuing.

On Saturday morning, a man was arrested for urinating in public. The offender was apologetic and managed to avoid custody and was released without charge.
