Basketballers make their mark in nationals

22 Jul, 2010 08:34 AM
Two young Port Augusta basketball players took on the best and biggest around the nation in the Under 16 Australian Basketball Championships.

Caritas College student Cameron Ortlepp captained the South Australian country boys and Claire Schupelius lined up in the girls team for the first time.

Both teams finished nine out of 16 – a solid finish in a competition that included teams from all the major Australian cities and New Zealand.

Cameron, who battled sickness during the 10 days, said he saw four or five boys in opposing teams that had already grown beyond two metres tall.

However he said the most memorable game in the Queensland competition was a match where his countryside beat long-term rivals Victoria.

Cameron and Claire both enjoyed holidays with their families after play ended.

They will now continue their weekly pilgrimage to Adelaide to play and train for their Norwood teams.
