 Can they do it again?

Can they do it again?

16 Apr, 2008 01:21 PM
Much like Port Adelaide Power last year coming from nowhere to play Geelong in the AFL grand final, West Augusta surprised most (probably including themselves) by coming from seeming oblivion to suit up against Port in the 2007 grand final.

But while both lost to their more fancied opponents the Hawks kicked themselves out of the flag and could possibly have pulled off one of the greatest heists of a premiership since Adelaide beat North Melbourne to win the 1998 flag!

The Hawks play fast, running football with a squad of youngsters who will now welcome back 2005 premiership half-back-flanker and Player of the Year Ryan Noll, fellow backmen Scott Foulis, Kirk Higgins and midfielder cum forward Matty Woodforde.

The Hawks have retained Rob Singleton who looks fitter than he ever has, have added Byron Taylor from Willsden, Sollies' Justin Delaney and Northern Cities squad member Josh Scharenberg from South Whyalla.

These players will no doubt ensure that the fledgling Hawks of 2007 don't experience the second year blues despite losing Joel Coulthard to Adelaide, Dion Tansell, Justin and Marko Strangways and player of the finals Ryan Mc Donald to Central.

The trademark West go forward from half back will continue and watch for another brilliant season from inspirational skipper Adam Zubrinich and the "pop-up toaster" Ray Stapleton who was outstanding last year playing a number of roles.

The Hawks were a "work in progress" last year after shedding 11 first team regulars and in some eyes "over-achieved", however they have been impressive in trial games, fear no-one and could go one step further this year and emulate 2005.

Watch for youngsters Matt Davies and Jake Harris.

Once again the team plays Central and South four times and has been handed seven Sunday matches making life a little tough for player and official alike.

Prediction: top three.
