Former greats visit to help zone junior cricket council

28 Oct, 2009 01:47 PM
Former Australian wicket-keeper Wayne Phillips and ex-South Australian left-arm pace bowler Sam Parkinson will be guest speakers at the Central Augusta Football and Sporting Club on Friday November 6 from 8pm.

The night is being put on by the Upper North Zone Junior Cricket Council and Kookaburra Sport.

An autographed Kookaburra bat is the door prize with another signed bat to be raffled.

Tickets will be $25 per family which will help in providing support for both the OneSteel Under 14 and Under 16 teams trip to Adelaide in December and January.

Phillips, a dashing opening batsman and reluctant stumper whose trademark mullet and moustache was a crowd favorite, scored a Test hundred on debut and played 27 tests and 48 One-Day Internationals.

Parkinson took more than 100 first-class wickets for South Australia and was a practical joker, beginning as a member of the SAPSASA team that played in NSW when he pretended to be an official newspaper seller at the SCG whilst the SA team were guests at a Sheffield Shield match in the 1970s.

Phillips is a former coach with the Australian Cricket Academy and the Redbacks 2003-2007.

Parkinson is a board member on the South Australian Cricket Association and has his own sports marketing firm.
