On Friday night Upper North Cricket held a sportsman’s night with former Test player Wayne Phillips and ex-South Australian left-arm paceman Sam Parkinson to raise money for the Under 14 and Under 16 teams.
Whilst the turn-out was not great the two speakers were. Both sincere ambassadors of cricket and fierce South Australians, their stories about facing the fearsome West Indies during the dominant 80s, Phillips’ hundred on debut and his times as coach of Redbacks were hilarious.
Parkinson via Kookaburra donated a bat signed by Brad Haddin and he gave a candid insight into the plans and thoughts of the SACA board, of which he is a member, and Cricket Australia particularly with reference to the future of Test, ODI and Twenty20 cricket.
The Upper North Tri-City Championship starts this weekend when Whyalla hosts Pirie. The Port Augusta Town side will be named during the week and they will play their first game away to Whyalla on Saturday, November 21. The Eagles will play their second and final game against Port Pirie at ETSA Oval the following week
