Juniors in country carnival

10 Mar, 2010 10:27 AM
Port Augusta Junior Tennis was recently represented at the 2010 State Country Carnival at Memorial Drive, Adelaide.

Port Augusta’s five teams of junior players competed in the annual four-day carnival competition held at Memorial Drive, Adelaide.

Despite getting off to a disappointing start with some matches being rained out on the first day of competition, each team competed in a good number of matches.

Playing at the Memorial Drive facility enabled the players the opportunity to play on varying surfaces including clay, grass, synthetic and hard courts.

Teams were selected from Port Augusta and Quorn players.

They were:

16U boys, team Port Augusta/Quorn: Tom Collins, Tim Manning, Sam Daw and Albert Seagrim.

This team competed strongly, winning two matches, drawing one and losing only one. They came third overall in their division.

Full results were:

Port Augusta/Quorn def Port Augusta, 6 sets to 0 sets

Port Augusta/Quorn def Barossa and Light (Blue), 6 sets to 0 sets

Port Augusta/Quorn lost to Barossa and Light (White), 1 set to 5 sets

Port Augusta/Quorn drew with Hills, 3 sets all.

16U boys, team Port Augusta: Adam Bentley, Dustyn Brauwers, Simon Finlay and Gunther Toime.

This team was forced to play in a higher division than they nominated for but did not let this stop them from giving their all at each match and tying on sets in one match. They came fifth in the division. Their results were:

Port Augusta lost to Port Augusta/Quorn, 0 sets to 6 sets

Port Augusta lost to Hills, 0 sets to 6 sets

Port Augusta drew with Barossa and Light (Blue), 3 sets all

Port Augusta lost to Barossa and Light (White), 0 sets to 6 sets

14U Boys Team; Port Augusta/Quorn: Clayton Brauwers, Mark Francis, Tyler Gilbert and Ryan Kuerschner.

These boys combined very well considering they came from two different clubs. They came third overall in their division, drawing two matches. Their results were:

Port Augusta/Quorn drew with Lower Murray, 3 sets all

Port Augusta/Quorn lost to Hills, 1 set to 5 sets

Port Augusta/Quorn drew with Barossa and Light, 3 sets all

12U Girls Team; Port Augusta/Quorn: Kate Collins, Nicole Manning, Bridget Manning and Georgina Kite.

These girls drew on the experience of their first carnival of the previous year to see their results improve markedly. Making their results even more impressive was the fact that they were forced to compete in a division higher than what they nominated. Their results were achieved in Division 1 in which they came fifth overall out of seven teams. Results were:

Port Augusta/Quorn lost to Barossa and Light 2 sets to 4 sets

Port Augusta/Quorn defeated Hills (White), 5 sets to 1 set

Port Augusta/Quorn lost to Lower Murray, 1 set to 5 sets

Port Augusta/Quorn lost to Port Pirie (Blue), 2 sets to 4 sets.

12U Boys Team; Port Augusta: Sean Kuerschner, Tom Daw, Zachery Packard and Justin Bentley.

These boys did very well in this closely contested division, only losing one match for the carnival. However they drew in two matches, which affected their overall ranking in the division. They were unlucky to not finish higher than their fifth ranking as a result. Their overall results were:

Port Augusta defeated Hills (White), 5 sets to 1 set

Port Augusta defeated Port Pirie, 3 sets all, winning on games

Port Augusta lost to South East, 2 sets to 4 sets

Port Augusta drew with Onkaparinga Creeks, 3 sets all

Port Augusta drew with Barossa and Light, 3 sets all.

The Port Augusta Tennis Association can be proud of these players who were competitive and
