Quigley takes out Transcontinental

02 Sep, 2009 11:12 AM
Port Augusta’s Joe Quigley took out the prestigious Transcontinental Medal at the Spencer Gulf League's award dinner on Monday night.

The highest honour the Madigan Medal was awarded to Tom Clarke of Port Pirie Bulldogs.

The count was close right to the end, but Clarke ran away with it, taking it out by five points, with 25 votes.

Michael Burford ruckman from Port and Joe Quigley from Central Augusta were joint runners up, ending the night with 15 votes each.

Garry Hull from Centrals came in at fourth on 14 votes.

A packed Solomontown Football Club held the event to celebrate the season's best players.

Over dinner and drinks players tipped the player they thought would win.

Clarke is the first player to win the Madigan Medal since Duncan Savage in 1999.

The ruck-rover has had a big year – he played in the SGL against Whyalla, Northern Zone in the South Australian Country Championships, and is looking for a three-peat in the Premiership this year.

Port finished second on ladder and will play Centrals in the qualifying final on Saturday.

Ports are looking for a third straight League Premiership in a row.

It would be apt if won, with the club celebrating its centenary this year.

Port leads the way in other voting counts, with the Ken Mitchell Leading Goal Kicker Award by Matt Gale with 74 goals taken out from Port.

The Under 18s leading goal kicker was then taken by Dylan Sykes from Ports with 79 goals.

Nick Saunders of Lions took out the Under 18s Bishop medal, Lachlan Archibald from Centrals won the Reserves Dyason medal with 16 votes and Anthony Martin from Centrals took out the leading goal kicker for reserves with 55 goals.
