Quorn minor premiers

03 Mar, 2010 08:47 AM
The Demons from Devil’s Peak are the minor premiers after a rousing five-wicket win over the Bulldogs on Saturday at Chinnery Oval.

In a dour qualifying final dress-rehearsal South took 45 overs to make 116 all-out with Freebairn’s 43 and Jak Waterworth’s 29 the only innings of note.

In reply Quorn used 31 overs and five wickets to make the runs and claim top spot.

Opener Mick Maloney did it yet again this time making half the runs himself in his 59-not out and Tim Connell capped a brilliant all-round game with 38 to go with the two wickets he took.

What would be worrying South would be just what is making Quorn happy, that is the Bullies struggle a little to combat consistent and persistent line and length bowling.

South’s run rate was 2.5 runs per over which allowed Simon George, for example, to record the incredible bowling figures of 9/4/11/3.

However, it must be said the new synthetic pitch makes for very difficult batting and the outfield still undulating enough to make value-for-shots negligible.

These two will now square-off in the second semi-final with the winner to advance to the grand final and the loser to play the victor of the Central-Stirling versus West Augusta.

The Tigers have finished third with their 15-run win over Willsden who will not be participating in the finals.

Set 228 to win at ETSA Oval the Wolves were 1/63 and then 2/167 as Shane Cox and Russell Coulthard put on 104 and when Cox was removed by McKenna for an even 100 the game was definitely in Willsden’s favour.

Quick-wickets lost and at 6/205 it was in the balance.

But the highly impressive Tim Manning making his A grade debut was rewarded for stump-to-stump bowling took his third wicket and that of Langsford to end the Wolves’ resistance.

With McKenna picking up the scalps of Grantham and Waters and Willsden running out of overs the Tigers finished the year off in style.

The Wolves improved week by week and should be congratulated for their efforts this year and exposing more players to a higher level of competition and to lifting the standard of the A grade.
