The Demons from Devil’s Peak are steeling themselves to halt one of the Upper North’s great sporting achievements.
The Chinnery Dynasty has seen West Augusta claim seven of the last eight A grade premierships.
Minor premier Quorn booked a place in this Saturday’s Grand Final with a 29-run win over South Augusta in the qualifying final rescheduled from last week due to rain.
Batting first, the Quornies posted 179 all-out with Simon George’s 45 and a 57-run union with Corey Finlay for the fourth wicket crucial.
From 4/135 to 6/137 the blue and whites were wilting but Cleyton Finlay (17) and Tim Connell (17) combined to realise 33 runs for the seventh wicket and with a score on the board it was all before the Bulldogs.
With 4/29 and the best figures for South, Anthony Freebairn had to turn around, put the pads on and open the batting in the chase.
He quickly fell for seven and at 5/109; the Bullies were floundering but the tail wagged and at 7/140 it could have gone any way.
South lost the last three wickets for the addition of only 10 runs and they condemned themselves to a preliminary final the next day.
Connell’s 3/30 and Simon George’s incredible 2/9 from 10 overs the difference.
The Hawks crushed the Tigers in the elimination final to advance to a face-off with South with a 10-wicket victory on the back of Lenny Brown’s 3/21 and Jason McInerney’s 2/8 and 47 not out.
In finals the trick is to bat first and build scoreboard pressure in defending but when Central-Stirling was humbled for 81 the toss-advantage was lost. A very disappointing end to an improved season.
On Sunday it was the preliminary final and the Bulldogs’ worst nightmare playing West in a final.
As they did the day before the Hawks were forced to chase at the toss and as they did on Saturday they made the job a stroll in the park by doing the hard work and demolishing South this time for only 88.
Stout resistance from Freebairn (27) and Gilbert (23) saved some pride with Lenny Brown capturing 4/20 as Mark Myers, Scott Benbow and McInerney claimed two wickets apiece.
With 52, Myers ensured that the win wouldn’t be a struggle and the two dominant Hawk displays have put the Quornies on notice.
For Westies this is a truly remarkable performance already since they have lost six games in succession had a bye and a match abandoned, not a single victory in two months but are now in the play-off for the flag.
Tip against West Augusta I dare anyone.
