Sollies start well but run out of gas

The local derby was held at Memorial Oval on Friday night in Port Pirie in front of a big crowd, with the blue and whites late in the second term holding a 21 point lead.

What appeared to lack in fitness for the Cats faded out in the second half, letting the green and whites run out 39 point winners on the night.

Sollies started the game well with ruckman Allan Margatich giving his team mates first use of the ball, the cats Matt Turner giving his side the first goal for the match.

The cats kept going forward and Damian Foster kicked Sollies’ second.

Not long after that the bulldogs Matthew Cox received a free kick, and then being given two 50m penalties for an undisciplined act by a Sollie player, then kicked Port’s first goal.

After an even five minutes of play Brodie Mudge marked strongly and kicked the bulldog's second goal.

The game was developing into a real struggle and Kane Wallace coming off the interchange bench gave the cats their third goal.

Sollies working much harder that Port at this stage managed again to get the ball forward to Foster and he kicked his second for the term.

When Leigh Promnitz kicked truly for sollies on the siren the cats had a handy 18 point lead at the first change.

Sollies’ Lindsay Bearmen and Jarrad Davies gave good drive in the second term and the bulldog players were lacking intensity.

First game player for the club Arron Featherstonehaugh was one Bulldog player who was trying to keep his side in the match.

He managed to kick the ball and Mudge kicked his second for Port.

Sollie ruckman Margatich was dominating the ruck and marked in the goal square and goaled.

Port went forward and Simon Treloar courtesy of a free kicked made a quick replying goal.

Watkins kicked his second and Foster straight after kicked his third and Sollies looked full of run and were now out to a 21 point lead.

Tom Clarke kicked a much needed goal for Port just before half time reducing the Cats’ lead to 15 points at the long break.

Coach DePalma demanded a stronger commitment from his players during the break and from the start of the third term you could see that Port were more committed at the ball.

Matt Kendall got the ball from centre and Tom Clarke kicked a long goal.

The bulldogs working harder now kicked another two quick goals through Ben Simpson and Treloar kicking his second for the match, and at the 10 minute mark of the quarter the bulldogs were four points in front.

After a 10 minute slog with neither team bothering the scoreboard, the bulldogs were now getting use of the ball out of the centre scored two quick goals from Jordan Coombe and Chad Parish who was now giving the green and white's good drive.

Tom Clarke received a free kick and a 50m penalty from another undisciplined act from a Sollie player, from the goal square kicked his third .

Port kicked six goals, four points for the term, maintaining Sollies to just one point, and had a 21 point lead at the final change.

The cats came out fired up at the start of the last quarter and went forward and Wallace snagged his third goal for the game and it was to be the Cats last for the game.

Port peppering away hit the post twice before Jess Penny kicked a major and the Bulldogs had a 22 point lead.

Sollies kept trying but many of their players had now run out of gas.

The Bulldogs’ key forward Brodie Mudge kicked two goals straight giving him four goals for the game.

Tom Clarke who was the bulldogs best player was on the end of a good passage of play also kicked his fourth for the game and Port ran out 39 point winners.
