Port Augusta football identity Margaret Nobbs has etched her name even deeper into the city’s football history with a win at the South Australian National Football League’s Volunteer of the Year Awards this month.
Mrs Nobbs was named this year’s SANFL Volunteer of the Year for the northern region.
Nominated by the SANFL’s northern regional development coordinator, Craig Oliphant, Mrs Nobbs was recognised for her voluntary dedication to the local football arena.
Her work has spanned almost 40 years and has included presidential and treasurer roles for the Port Augusta Colts Football League, membership with the Central Augusta Football Club Ladies Committee and her relentless work behind her beloved canteen alongside the Central Oval grandstand.
The win was announced at the 2009 Key Volunteers Dinner at AAMi Stadium’s Magarey Room, however an unfortunately timed medical scare meant Mrs Nobbs was in hospital on the presentation night.
“I was upset, because it was a big thing,” Mrs Nobbs said about being unable to personally accept the award.
With her spirits far from dampened, she said the award was a pleasant surprise nonetheless.
“It was so nice to be recognised… I mean I never do it to get recognised, I do it because I love it.”
The win adds to string of accolades, including life membership with the Port Augusta Colts and the Central Augusta Football Club and her 2008 induction into the Port Augusta Hall of Fame.
In particular she said her work with the Port Augusta Colts was some of the most rewarding work.
“I always love watching the kids play, because they are our future players.
“Without the Colts, we wouldn’t have any A grade players, or local players going to the AFL.”
“Every year before the Colts football season starts I always go to the Port Augusta business people for donations … I have been doing it for so long, now when they see me coming they always get their cheque books out,” she laughed.
“They’re all very generous.”
And when asked how much longer she’ll stick to her roles across the local football scene, Mrs Nobbs replied: “As long as I can.”
