West Augusta d 5.6 (36) d South Augusta 2.9 (21).
West Augusta Hawks continued their domination over South Augusta for the season in a clash of the top two teams, by defeating the Bulldog outfit by 15 points on Sunday.
With the top team West playing the second-placed team South, there was a lot at stake.
West won the toss and licked with a two-to-three goal breeze and both teams started well with goals to Shannon Page, Wests and Darren Shillabeer for Souths.
Higgins for West was rebounding well from half back while South’s Jake Collins at centre half forward provided an avenue for attacks.
South’s Adam Grantham, Chris Heron, Matthew Grantham and Ben Trewartha also started well.
In the last half of the quarter, West dominated and were first to the ball which gained the benefit of several frees which were converted.
Page was becoming a handfull for Collins with three goals and Woodforde chipped in with one goal.
Stapleton also kicked an easy goal and Hobbs for West was rebounding several attacks.
West continuously drove the ball out of centre and were well on top going into the first quarter break 8.1 to South 2.2.
South started well in the second quarter with the wind.
Brett Jones started to dominate in the centre and Daniel Dohnt was gaining some clearances.
Laube was winning the rucks and South’s managed to kick four goals in the second quarter.
For West, Scharenburg continued to play well and Hannan picked up many touches.
Two late goals from West's Vincent Warren increased the gap once more and they went in to the half time break with a comfortable lead 10.5 to 6.3.
South started well into the breeze in the third quarter and gained a new lease of life with the ball coming out of centre and its forwards in front.
Laube continued to dominate the rucks and Christian Reid showed some leadership in the forward lines with a good goal.
Other good players for South the quarter included Ben Trewartha, Daniel Royals, Greg Shirley, Skipworth, Shillabeer and Jones.
South kicked five goals this quarter, plus the three goals to West and the breeze made for a great last quarter with only two goals the difference - 13 goals 6 points to South 11 goals 6 points.
West’s Scharenburg continued to be a handful.5
Warren and Stapleton found space too easily and Page continued to be a great spearhead.
Nic Collins continued his good form and Michael Hilder presented himself well at centre half forward.
With two goals between them and South having a slight advantage with the cross breeze, the first goal was all important.
West's Page converted his fifth goal to start the quarter off well for the Hawks and although South had a good deal of the play, its forwards played from behind and poor kicking allowed West Augusta backman in Hobbs, Higgins, Dadleh and Warren to continuously repel any South advances.
West were never troubled in the last quarter and kicked two goals to South’s one, to take the game by 15 points.
Wingfield had a good last quarter for South together with Jones and Laube, however the forwards for South were never allowed to dominate and game ended with another disappointing loss to the top team West.
West set up the win with a great first quarter and although South came back well they played well to hold up to the South comeback in the third quarter.
The win will provide them with top spot going into the second half of the year.
South had several players down on form and must improve their disposal if they wish to feature in the finals race with important games ahead against Lions and Central Augusta to come.
Best players for West included the consistant Josh Scharenburg, Hannan, Jarrod Warren who repelled many attacks, Nic Collins and Page who troubled the South backline all day.
Best players for South included Daniel Royals who battled hard all day, Daniel Dohnt who is gaining in fitness and form, Brett Jones who used his pace to advantage, Brock Laube who carried the South rucks, Christain Reid who added some spark in the forward line and juniors Greg Shirley and Ben Trewartha with good work in the backlines.
