South v West, Saturday, June 26
In overcast conditions, Central Oval looked great after 30 points of rain and in first class condition.
A friendly crowd made for a good day out at the footy. Incidentally South Augusta Football Club held a vice president’s event near the scoreboard, with the whiff of barbecue steak, teasing the nose.
West were first into attack showing strong bodies under the eyes of umpires, Kennedy, Shillabeer and Jacobs, but South showed good leadership from captain Adam Grantham with a running goal.
To side settled, with Brett Jones’ goal at the two and a half minute mark, a reward for exertion.
The ruck contest of Laube and Coulthard showed strong bodies as South’s Corey Finlay, off the field with shoulder injury, was replaced by Daniel Collins.
West got the right mix with Hyden Warren, two goals, and Ray Stapleton one goal, with both sides fast paced and the umpiring free flowing.
In the second quarter West steadied when Nic Collins marked and goaled from a kick in and Hyden Warren took a strong mark 30 metres out and goaled at the six minute mark with South yet to score. That was until Christian Ried’s running goal at seven and a half minutes. South’s Ryan Struck took a heavy hit and was down for few minutes, showing a lot of character in front of passionate supporters.
Both sides nursed a few knocks and bruises, as South’s Feltus took a heavy one, but Lukich to Feltus 40 metres out at 21 minutes saw another goal. West in front as the quarter ended.
At half-time South coach “Anno” said: “I feel a special feeling inside our red jumpers” whilst West coach “Blinman” said: “This is an endurance test of the old glory days”.
In the third quarter the ball shot from one end to the other with missed opportunities in front of the official crowd of 596 patrons.
Highlight goals to West came from Corey Jonas, Dylan Dodd and Hayden Warren.
For South it was Ricky Johnson, Daniel Dohnt and Christian Reid with the play of the day to South with a series of handballs down the scoreboard side for a long-bomb goal on the three quarter time siren – South’s by five points.
South opened the fourth quarter with a strong mark to Dohnt, followed by an umpire’s penalty from Nic Collins and a goal at one minute. Heavy packs with fun out, a brilliant spectacle.
This quarter exploded with free flowing football, umpires allowing plenty of freedom, and inaccuracy from both sides hit its height.
For Wests, Dempsey Kelly, John McKenna, a Hayden Warren goal at the 22 minute mark; and an out of the ruck running goal to Corey Jonas at 24 minute sealed “the envelope”. West by eight points.
South’s only goal for the quarter came from Feltus after a series of passes to both sides.
It was a first-class show of Aussie rules, and high on confidence, but Westies were more hungry.
South should remember, recovery is so important and rebuilding will take some time.
Final score: West Augusta 12.10 (82) d South Augusta 11.8 (74).
