The Whyalla Steel City Drag Club started its race season under dark heavy rain clouds, which kept the spectator numbers down.
A two hour delay due to rain making it unsafe to race and the track ground crew having to dry the rack to make it safe for racing.
Matty Watts travelled down from Alice Springs with his supercharged altered to try out the Whyalla track, but due to the high horsepower and the weather conditions was unable to show the crowed the sub five seconds potential of the car and he ran a best time of 5.813 seconds for the 1/8th mile track.
The feature Super Sedan and Modified bracket had some very close racing all night with the win going to Nenard Stolic of Adelaide’s in his Chevrolet Nova over Whyalla’s David Murray in his 1923 model T Bucket.
In the Super Street Bracket Kylie Wagner of Adelaide in her LJ Torana won over Stefan Dinys also from Adelaide in his VZ Commodore .
The bike bracket had Whyalla’s Kieran Belamarie the winner over Port Augusta’s Si Heaslip.
The SA Street Challenge bracket was down on racers at this meeting but was won by Port Augusta’s Darren Grantham over Whyalla’s Ron Matthews.
The club’s next meeting is round two of the Charlie Dennis Series on January 10 at the Steel City Raceway.
