Port Augusta’s racing season has begun after a better than expected opening meeting on Friday.
A light five millimetres of rain in the morning dampened the track and set it up for a strong afternoon of racing.
A total of 95 horses hit the track across eight races.
Winners included thoroughbreds from the West Coast, Strathalbyn and Broken Hill.
The biggest surprise came courtesy of race eight when Our Paternoster with rider Jordan Mallyor taking out first place despite having the lowest odds.
With more punters than expected the race booklets for the race program sold out on the day, an outcome Port Augusta Racecourse President Geoff Fullerton said was unexpected.
“This first meeting exceeded all our expectations,” he said.
“I can’t remember a meeting teeing off with such a great number of nominations.”
“It was a great start to the season…Port Augusta racing looks more healthy than ever.”
The next meeting will be on Thursday May 7.
