On Friday, March 15, Aboriginal golfers from the city will be converging upon Port Augusta to contest the championship against a team selected from the country regions.
This event is in memory to the late Kenny Buckskin, a Port Augusta local, a very well respected Aboriginal community elder, musician, singer, artist, family man and avid golfer, who dedicated his life to Aboriginal affairs, families, men’s issues, advocating for and endeavouring to provide a better way of life, through his actions, for Aboriginal people and educating Aboriginal people through a variety of opportunities to ensure their, and their children’s, future was strong.
This event, now in its third season, alternates between the Gawler Golf Club and the Port Augusta Golf Club.
The championship is fiercely contested and a perpetual award is the reward for the best team calculated on the collective team scores on the day.
Presentations will be held at the club at the conclusion of the days play.
Sponsors, who play a very vital role in the support of country community events, have wholeheartedly supported this championship.
Oz Minerals is the major sponsor with many other valuable contributions including, The Aboriginal Affairs and Reconciliation Division - Dept of Premier and Cabinet, Aboriginal Drug and Alcohol Council, Pika Wiya Aboriginal Health Service, Ceduna-Koonibba Aboriginal Health Service, UniSA, SA Police and several personal donations.
A representative, of each sponsor, has been invited to participate during the event to enjoy the camaraderie, fun, laughter and love of the game and the professionalism of the conduct of formal proceedings.
Numerous highly prized awards are on offer for team and individuals, with the winning team taking home the major award until the following year.
Mr Buckskin won the State Aboriginal Golf Championship in 2005 at the Gawler Golf Club and it is for this reason the event alternates between both clubs.
The 2014 event will be contested at the Gawler Golf Club.
