The inaugural Port Augusta Billy Cart Derby hosted by the Northern Drag and Motorsport Association (NDMA) will be held on Sunday, October 19 and is an event for the whole family with free admission for spectators.
The track starts at the Young and Jervois Street intersection and start ramps will propel the carts and bikes down to the end of Tassie and Young Street intersection. A pit area will be situated at both ends of the start and finish lines of the track for use by the racers and their crews.
Both Young Street and Mackay Street will be closed throughout the day with plenty of food stalls and entertainment for the whole family to enjoy.
There will be a jumping castle, a coffee van, barbecues, fairy floss, popcorn and donuts as well as an opportunity for children to meet Mickey and Minnie mouse, Peppa Pig and a ninja turtle.
A static show and shine display will be held on Mackay Street with a variety of vintage and classic cars for all to enjoy.
Two-time World Gravity Bike Champion (2008, 2009) Brett Phillips from Victoria will also be at the event.
The Rotary Club of Port Augusta are supplying their impressive timing gear for the event, the same they use for the Pichi Richi Marathon.
Scrutineering of the vehicles entered will take place from 7am, time trials begin at 9 and will finish around 11 with an hour break before racing starts at 12.
For safety of both spectators and competitors Young Street will be lined with fencing and hay bales.
Categories available for those interested in entering the races include wooden carts for children aged eight to 14 with a $10 entry fee, Billy Cart ages eight to 15 $15 and ages 16 and over $25, G - Bike ages eight to 15 $15 and ages 16 and over $25.
There is also an opportunity for businesses to enter a cart for $50, volunteers carts for $30, and the NDMA are supplying four carts for event sponsors to share and join in the fun.
A feature race of the event will be the NDMA Club race available for NDMA members as well as those who join or re-join on the day of the Billy Cart Derby with $500 for first place up for grabs, this is an event not to be missed by members.
Entries will only be accepted online up until Friday, October 17 and can be found at www.ndmabillycarts.info with a link to the online registration form listed on the home page, no entries will be accepted on the day.
Competitors are reminded starting ramps will be used and to refer to the website for ramp specifications to ensure their billy cart will not touch the ground at take off.
The NDMA are encouraging members of the public to attend the event and are welcoming anyone who is looking to become a member to head along and join on the day.
