Three male prisoners were caught in an unauthorized area of the Port Augusta Prison in the late hours of Tuesday night.
A Spokesperson for the Department of Correctional Facilities said the area is a construction site for new accommodation
“All prisoners were still within the secured perimeter of the prison and there was no threat to public safety,” the spokesperson said.
The prisoners were found in the area at about 8.45pm and are alleged to have come from the prison’s ‘employment unit’, an area of shared accommodation.
SA Police were called and arrived immediately.
The prisoners declined to return from the unauthorized area once they were found.
“They refused to return to their cells so our staff negotiated with them for about four hours and returned to their cells without incident at about 1am (Wednesday),” the spokesperson said.
The incident is subject to a SA Police and Department of Correctional Facilities investigation.
