There was more horsepower on display at Auto One on Thursday, May 18 than every Melbourne Cup combined as 2011 SummerNats Burnout Master Gary Myers and son Jake Myers visited, drawing in a big crowd.
Gary has a long list of burnout awards next to his name, most notably 2011 Summer Nats Burnout Master, while Jake finished third in 2016.
The duo were visiting ahead of the Steel City Nats held from May 20-21 and Gary said it was great to visit Port Augusta, and gave an insight to what revs his passion.
I’ve been doing it for 30 years when Summernats started so it’s just in my blood, and it’s just the adrenaline that gets me goingGary Myers
“Obviously when you get out on the pad in front of big crowds, especially at summernats, it’s the pinnacle to compete at summernats now with the way you have to qualify,” he said.
“So much can come out of it like sponsorship deals and that sort of stuff.”
As a mechanic by trade, Gary has done trade courses in a wide range of automotive courses so the each car he rides in is predominately made by him, including the engine.
Gary said he’s participated in burnout competitions across most Australian states where prize money can range from $5000-$15,000.
He also runs similar competitions to Steel City Nats with his wife, which brings in competitors from around Australia.
Gary now competes in a 1972 XA GT Coupe but previously competed in a 1966 Ford Mustang, which his son Jake now competes in.
The latter packs a 302ci V-8, four-bolt-main World Industries Windsor engine, 650 rear wheel horsepower at 7,500 rpm and does a 11.2-second quarter-mile elapsed time.
Jake was sporting a broken arm after a motocross accident but that didn’t dampen his spirit as he said he loves to get out into regional communities like Port Augusta.
“We thought we’d do an open day so everyone can come and check out the cars before this weekend,” he said.
“It’s good to get out and interact with people from Whyalla and Port Augusta.”
Steel City Nats takes part at Steel City Dragway, Mullaquana Road, Whyalla.
It promises to be another action packed event involving burnout competitions, races, motokhana and plenty of cash prizes and trophies.
