The Magpies Netball Club is celebrating its 60th anniversary in 2017.
The club’s committee has organised a celebration on Saturday, July 22 at West Augusta Football Club, starting at 7.00pm.
Music and supper will be provided, tickets $10 for adults and children $5, available from the club, Topline Trophies and at the door.
Magpies club is extending a very big welcome to supporters, ex-players and the wider netball community to the celebration.
Magpies began as a club in the Port Augusta Netball Association in 1957.
Colleen Hutchison was one of the first players and recruited new players.
This began her long association with this new club – Magpies and Magpies Rebels.
Colleen captained and coached her team for many years, achieving outstanding success, for which Magpies honoured her with a Foundation Life Membership.
No club is successful without dedicated players, members and supporters.
During the eighties and nineties these included Helen Davey, Leonie Davis, Melita Miller, Kylie Eberhard, Mandy Chapman, Sarah Press, Louise Kirkham, and Tanya Aird.
Today, Magpies is one of the larger clubs and has a very enthusiastic and hardworking Committee.
In 1972 Magpies won their first A1 premiership and the members of this team still meet on a regular basis, a real testament to their loyalty and comradeship towards each other and the club.
Magpies won premierships under very successful coach Joy Ferber.
Magpies were again successful under coach Carmen Kernahan and the following Magpie team members won Trancontinental Medals during that time were Mel McHugh, Tiffany Warren, Marcia Byron, and Mandy Chapman.
Tiffany and Mel are still involved with the club and Carmen Kernahan recently retired from coaching the Squad and played her last game in 2016 after winning the premiership in D grade.
Carmen is still coaching 15 Div 1, C and D grade in 2017.
Life member Kylie Eberhard is the president in 2017 and supports new ideas from members and is encouraged that the clubs future is strong having an increase of 20 new players a season.
Jas Eckert is in her second year of coaching Magpies squad and is impressed with young hardworking players who are finding their strengths and are motivated to compete at their best.
Magpies Netball Club has had lots of support over the years, and their members are hard-working, continuing to contribute to the life of the club and the association.
Not all our valued members have been mentioned here, but their contribution to Magpies has been appreciated.
