THIRD PLACE: Both of Port Augusta's men's and women's division one volleyball teams took home bronze at the 2017 Port Augusta Volleyball Open.

Twenty-one teams from eight clubs converged on Port Augusta this weekend to compete in the 2017 Port Augusta Volleyball Open.

Port Augusta’s division one men competed well in the minor round, including a win against the eventual division winners, and it was only on percentage that Port Augusta missed out on competing against the undefeated Tea Tree Gully Tigers in the gold medal match.

The grand final was a thrilling affair, going all the way to five sets, with the underdogs – Tea Tree Gully Monkeys – toppling their more fancied opponents.

Both teams brought plenty of fire power to bear, but it was the more resilient Monkeys that managed to weather the storm and allow their defence to shine through.

The bronze medal match saw iron triangle rivals Port Augusta and Whyalla battle it out, with Port Augusta’s spikers overcoming a solid Whyalla defence two sets to one in a timed game.

In the division one women Port Augusta got off to a shaky start, losing their first three games, before getting back on track and winning two out of their next three.

This saw them take on Whyalla in the Bronze medal match and proving too strong across the court, taking out the match three sets to zero.

The Saturday games proved to be quite difficult for the division two teams with both the Port Augusta Men and Women failing to win a game.

Sunday turned things around with the division two women’s winning their final match to make it into the bronze medal playoff and besting a strong Port Lincoln side.

The men managed to make a move up the ladder to fifth with an extremely tight win over Tea Tree Gully Gators winning on a points countback after full time.

The division two women’s final saw an energetic Heathfield High take on tournament new comers Port Pirie.

Heathfield High put up a good fight, but the more seasoned players in Pirie were keen to make a splash in their first appearance, losing only one set the entire tournament and taking out gold in three straight sets.

The final game played on Sunday saw tournament regulars Port Lincoln and Roxby, having been the previous two winners of the tournament, battle it out for supremacy.

After two strong sets from Roxby, Lincoln changed up tactics and wrested back control winning the next two.

The final set was a see-sawing affair with Roxby having match point twice before Lincoln finally sealed the deal and won back to back titles in the division two men.

The Port Augusta Volleyball Association would like to thank all the clubs & players that attended and made this such a successful event.
