Former Port Augusta man Joshua Vines will be contesting the seat of Stuart for the Labor Party.

The decision was made on Tuesday, just 24 days before the election.

This gives Mr Vines just over three weeks to make an impression on Port Augusta and the region.

He will be trying to unseat local member Dan van Holst Pellekaan who claimed the seat at the 2010 state election with 57.6 per cent of the votes to Labor's 42.4 per cent on a two-party preferred basis.

Mr Vines is currently a staffer at member for Port Adelaide Susan Close's office.
