Port Augusta City Council (PACC) will spend up to $100,000 to assist in funding the Joy Baluch statue and related installation costs.
The decision to support the final design and allocate the funds was made at the council meeting held on Tuesday, January 27.
PACC decided to allocate a maximum of $100,000 within the 2015/2016 council budget and will look to fundraising to reduce the impact on rate payers.
An amendment to the original recommendations to support the final design and allocate the funds, added that council will seek funding from federal and state agencies and bodies to assist with the cost.
At the meeting, four elected members voted to delay the decision but were overruled by five votes to go ahead with the recommendations.
The quoted price to design and prepare the statue is $121,800.
This figure does not include the cost for preparation of the site ie; footing, lighting and landscaping, which is estimated to cost around $10,000-$15,000.
A group of Mrs Baluch’s friends and supporters have formed a fundraising committee to financially support the purchase of the statue.
So far, the group has raised $13,066 and have further fundraising events and activities being planned before June 30, 2015.
Linda Karfeld is the artist that will make the statue.
