The Tri-State Games is a massive sporting event which brings together athletes from Victoria, South Australia and New South Wales in a huge week of competition.

Competitors come from a range of disability organisations and over 300 athletes compete each year.

The games started in 1986 with the aim to bring together people with disabilities in order to promote friendly competition and participation.

The event location is changed every two years, but the event is typically held over one week in November in each year.

In 2017, the games were hosted in Horsham, Victoria from November 12-17.

An enthusiastic group of seven athletes – nicknamed the ‘Spencer Sprites’ – and eight family members arrived at Horsham on Sunday, November 12, some nine hours and 730 kilometres from Port Augusta.

The Spencer Sprites were made up of Andrea Scholar, Tony Holtham, Mark Shillabeer, Jane Prodromou, Billie Kernahan, Caitlen Drummond and Maureen Cross.

The games have a huge roster of events on their calendar including table tennis, pool, basketball, track & field, long jump, shot put, football distance kick, swimming, ten pin bowling, tee ball, indoor cricket, bocce, soccer, croquet and many more.

Events can be modified to allow for carers to assist the athletes if required, and some events hold time trials so that the organisers can place athletes with similar skill levels in commensurate events.

The Games were again a wonderful success, with athletes enjoying six days of catching up with friends, competing in their various events and a dinner and medal presentation and disco on four nights at the Wimmera Field Days site – 15kms outside of Horsham.

The highlight was the medal presentation, with each athlete's face beaming with the pride and joy of their achievement.

It is clear that the moment is enjoyed no less than any Olympic medal winner. All of our athletes collected at least one medal.

The group is very thankful to the organisations that provided assistance with the cost of our trip to Horsham.

The 2018 Tri-State Games will be held in Adelaide in November.
