State Member for Stuart Dan van Holst Pellekaan has no doubt federal government will deliver on its Joy Baluch AM Bridge duplication promise.
Following revelations that funding for the bridge duplication would not become available until after the 2018-19 financial year, the Stuart MP said he believes federal government’s $160 million commitment is genuine.
“There is commentary in the federal budget that confirms their commitment to the bridge,” he said.
“It’s very frustrating for all concerned to have this confusion because the previous state government hasn’t done the work required to allow the budget process to flow.”
State government has committed to a $40m contribution towards the $200m duplication project.
Mr van Holst Pellekaan said he would continue to work with Mayor Sam Johnson and federal Member for Grey Rowan Ramsey to make the project happen.
“We must now determine the very best way to spend the $200m for the benefit of local people, travellers and the freight industry and the solution must also meet the needs of pedestrians, gopher riders and cyclists," he said.
“An overall transport solution that considers the main bridge, Yorkey’s Crossing and the old bridge is essential.”
