Thousands of people descended to the Port Augusta Racecourse on Sunday, July 8, to participate in one of the biggest days on Port Augusta’s social calendar, the City of Port Augusta Cup.

Aldolphin, owned by Sue and Reg Nolan, led from start to finish to triumph as the surprise winner of the cup, despite some bookies giving the outsider $101 odds.

City of Port Augusta Cup regular Alice Lindsay was Aldolphin’s jockey, while Sue Nolan was the trainer.

Port Augusta Racing Club (PARC) Secretary Emily Holden said it was a fantastic day, with the crowd embracing some of the club’s newest features.

“It was fabulous to see people enjoying the new facilities, including the deck at the front of the Ian’s Western Hotel Saloon and the Pimm’s marquee area,” Ms Holden said.

“The attendance was great on the day, we were extremely happy with the numbers on course.”

The 2018 Fashion at the Races competition was the biggest in the club’s history, with over $4500 worth of prizes up for grabs.

Mija Reynolds was crowned Best Dressed Lady, winning $1000 cash and a watch donated by Milhinch Hourglass Jewellers.

Alana White was named the Runner-up Best Dressed Lady, while Chris O’Neill was the Best Dressed Man.

Other winners include Laura Gray (Millinery), Lyn Coffey (Runner-up Millinery) and Ann-Marie Pick (Elegant Lady).

In the juniors, Mercedes Faber (Best Dressed Teen) and Hannah Coffey (Best Dressed Girl) won their respective categories for the second year in a row, while Vaughan Yates was the Best Dressed Boy.

Ms Holden thanked sponsors and the local community for getting behind the event.

The club has three more race meetings on its 2018 calendar with the Sunday Races event to be held on July 22.

The Australian Hotels Association Publicans Race Day is set to take place on Sunday, August 12, before the season wraps up on Sunday, September 2, with the Outback Family Race Day.
