A handful of excited Port Augusta junior basketball stars are waiting with anticipation this week as they get ready to test their skills against the country’s best.

From January 14 to 19, 11 players will travel to either Albury for the Australian Country Junior Basketball Cup or to Melbourne for the Southern Cross Challenge.

Port Augusta has had a good history of our junior Basketballers competing at these competitions, but 11 is the most players to represent Port Augusta for some time.

This large selection is a good reflection of the work the players, coaches and parents have put in over the past several years to give our juniors the best opportunities to compete at these prestigious events.

Under 14 Girls

Chernille Digance: A Guard who can pressure the ball with her aggressive defense, who can attack the basket well when the key opens up.

Under 14 Boys

Max Edwards: A smart Point Guard who understands the game very well, who will look to hit shots consistently from outside, as his 3 point shooting continues to improve.

Deacon Pillion: May be an undersize big at the competition, but his work rate and understanding of the game will allow him to be a consistent contributor for his team, who can do most things well.

Hunter Press: Hunter is regarded as one of the best in the State for his age group and will be a huge factor in how far his team will go, he is a natural scorer and has a knack for getting steals

Under 15 Girls

Ellyssa Myles: A combo guard who can play numerous roles and will be a key contributor for her team, whether as a scorer, passer or defensive stopper.

Ashleigh McKenna: A good offensive player who has focused on defense this season, where Ashleigh has an ability to defend multiple positions and girls bigger than her

Sophie Glamuzina: A tough, uncompromising player who loves to use her body and fight down low for extra offensive possessions and make tough shots

Under 16 Girls

Gemma Broadwood: Plays as a big, but has the ability to handle the ball and hit a shot from distance, to help space the floor. Is a solid defender against bigger opponents

Under 16 Boys

Mitchell Searle: Mitchell has done so much in the past two to three years with his Basketball and this provides another opportunity for Mitchell to stamp his name as one of the best kids in the Country.

Dominic Carter: A tall solid shot blocking defender, who has improved his offense over the past few seasons, where he is now a huge threat to score close to the basket, as well as knock the outside shot.

Under 18 boys:

Codin Mason: Codin began playing Basketball four seasons ago, and his Basketball continues to improve. He has a good shot from outside and can attack the Basket. He may have some highlights at the Championships that will no doubt be talked about, if he comes up with a Slam Dunk that he has done in games recently.

The selection of these athletes to represent country South Australia comes off the back of many hours of hard work and dedication to their basketball development over the last year.

Port Augusta Basketball wishes our Junior Basketballers all the best for the upcoming tournaments. Enjoy the experience and leave it all out on the court.
