The Crows team without best player and captain Wes Yates were still able to defeat top team South Augusta Bulldogs in an upset win in the seventh round of the table tennis season.
Crows players stepped up despite the setback to perform well on the night with the attacking games of the improved Otto Basson with 3 wins and Daniel Lutz with 2 wins showing the way. Both players have improved greatly this year and showed that they will not be easy beats in an even competition.
For the disappointing losers Bulldogs, Tim Clarke had 2 wins and Adrian Christie from Coober Pedy 2 wins were the only ones to hold their heads high, the finals score Crows 6 rubbers 21 sets to Bulldogs 5 rubbers 23 sets. Best matches for the night included Otto defeating Mark Shirley 11/4 in the fifth set and Otto defeating Adrian Christie 11/6 in the fifth, Tim Clarke having one moment of glory with a 11/8 win in the 5th set and Daniel Lutz and 11/6 win over Mark Shirley in another even contest.
In the other senior match Port Augusta Refrigeration Eagles had an easy win over Hawks 8 rubbers 25 sets to 3 rubbers 14 sets, the Hawks having to regroup after an uneventful night.
Best players for the Eagles were Jannie Basson with 3 wins from 3 games, David Christie 2 wins and Phil Morphett 1 win and for the losers Karl Chamberlain had 2 wins and Andy Couzner 1 win , the best match being Jannie Basson defeating Karl 11/4 in the 5th set.
Captain Karl Chamberlain, although disappointed knows he can get more out of his senior players in Bruce Molinuex and Andy Couzner and feels they will improve in time. The doubles game was a highlight with Jannie and Phil Morphett defeating Karl and Andy 12/10 in the 5th set in an epic match.
In division 2 Mick McKinlay and Shaurya Tiwari from the Hawks teamed up to defeat Karli Basson and Jock McTaggart 4 rubbers to 3 rubbers in a tight match against Eagles, Mick having 2 wins from 2 matches and Shaurya 1 win.
In the other Division 2 match Crows 3 rubbers defeated Bulldogs 1 rubber in a low scoring event. Best players for Crows Dougal McTaggart with 1 win and Jock McTaggart with 1 win.
Best player awards for this week went to Otto Basson who had 3 wins to bring the Crows home against the hapless Bulldogs and in Shaurya Tiwari showed he has great potential with 2 wins with his attacking game improving each week.
The Premiership race is wide open in Division 1 with South Augusta Bulldogs on top with percentage from the Magic FM Crows on second spot with 4 wins each and Eagles and Hawks both on 3 wins each making up the rest of the ladder .
The Port Augusta Table Tennis Association were defeated convincingly by the skilful Jamestown outfit on Friday, June 22, 32 rubbers to 17 rubbers with the best players for the Port Augusta team being in the top group of seeded players Wes yates with 2 wins from 3 matches, and Karl Chamberlain 2 wins followed by Andy Couzner 2 wins in the third group, Daniel Lutz 2 wins in the fourth ranked group and Vaughan Yates 2 wins in the fifth group, well done to all of these players who represented the town well.
