Fatal plane crash at Leigh Creek

A pilot and their passenger have died following a plane crash near Leigh Creek airport on Saturday night.

At about 6.30pm police responded to reports of a light plane crash in the area.

A Brumby 610 had left the William Creek airport at about 4pm and crashed into scrubland on its approach to the Leigh Creek airport.

The pilot, a 59-year-old man from Queensland and his passenger, a 48-year-old Queensland woman, were killed in the crash.

Investigators from Major Crash are at Leigh Creek and were joined by Investigators from Recreational Aviation Australia late last night.

A temporary air exclusion zone is currently in place with a one-kilometre radius and 1000-foot ceiling until 3.30pm today, unless otherwise advised.

Police will be preparing a report for the State Coroner.
