Demolition works scheduled for bridge duplication project

The first major step of the Joy Baluch Bridge Duplication project is set to get underway later this month.

The Department of Planning Transport and Infrastructure will begin demolition works next Wednesday, November 13 and expect to have them completed by January 2020.

Five properties are set for demolition in locations around Tassie Street, Mill Street and Mackay Street to make way for the new bridge.

When asked if any residents will be displaced as a result of the demolition work the Department said it has been liaising with those affected.

"The department has been communicating with the community and stakeholders, including relevant property owners, about the project and they will continue to be engaged moving forward," a spokesperson said.

"Our priority is to consult with the affected property owners and businesses directly, which has been occurring since the project was announced."

The team in charge of the duplication project has reportedly undertaken Property Condition Assessments (PCAs) of homes and businesses in close proximity to the demolition work.

The PCA is a precautionary measure only, and it is not expected that demolition activities will have any negative impact on adjacent properties.

An asbestos assessment will also be completed prior to demolition and any identified asbestos will be removed by a licenced asbestos contractor in accordance with Environmental Protection Authority Guidelines.

Pedestrians are advised to take care when moving through the area and for safety reasons there may be some restricted access.

The department advises temporary and minor traffic restrictions may apply in the vicinity of the works.

Major construction of the Joy Baluch AM Bridge Duplication is still scheduled to commence in late 2020.

It is unclear whether any properties on the west side of the gulf will be affected by the project.
