Early last year Shalana Cox attended a trial for SA Nunga netball, vying for the chance to participate in the Australian Indigenous Schoolgirls Netball Championships on the Gold Coast.
Not only was Shalana successful in making the Under 16s team, she proved to be an integral member of the squad.
The championships were held over five days, seeing the best players from all over Australia compete for the grand title.
Shalana's team played played Western Australia in the knock out final, which went into overtime before SA claimed the win by just two goals.
They faced a determined Queensland in the Grand Final, but held their nerve and went on to win the tournament.
Shalana was chosen as the Most Valuable Player for her team, as well as the Player's Player.
Port Augusta was also represented by girls in the championship winning Under 12 division; Laila Buckskin, Kelisha Reid and Tyeisha Taylor.
Tia buckskin, Sarch Taylor, Kellis Jackson-Martin and Kyra Mahommad in Under 14s, and Shayla Reid in Under 18s.
Throughout the week Shalana impressed selectors, with her performance earning her a place in the Australian Budgies team where she will represent Australia at two international carnivals later this year.
