Police have charged a man allegedly involved in a fatal crash in Port Augusta West early Saturday.
Just before 2.30am, police and ambulance crews were called to Caroona Road after reports that a vehicle, believed to be a silver-grey 2013 Toyota Kluger, had hit two people then allegedly drove away.
A 50-year-old man and a 44-year-old woman, both of Port Augusta West, died at the scene.
About noon, the alleged driver of the vehicle, a 39-year-old from Port Augusta, went to Port Augusta Police Station where he was arrested.
He was charged with two counts of causing death by dangerous driving, failing to stop at the scene of a crash and one count of aggravated driving without due care.
He was refused bail and will appear in the Port Augusta Magistrates Court on Monday.
The vehicle was found just after 12.30pm and was forensically examined before being seized and towed to the Port Augusta impound yard.
Caroona Road was closed between Hartley Street and Addison Road.
